The Society was founded on February 2nd 1943 ‘to encourage the study and playing of piano music by presenting at least four concerts in each season’. Initially half of each concert would be given by members, and the other half by a professional pianist. This arrangement was replaced by having one full evening each season for members, the remainder being filled by professionals. This continued until the Millennium Season when the members evening was replaced by an additional professional concert.
For many years the Society was the only surviving society in the country devoted entirely to the presentation of piano music. Members are now drawn from a wide area including Co. Durham, Tyneside, South Northumberland and Teeside.
At first the Society borrowed pianos, but as the membership grew it was decided
to buy a piano. After a great deal of fund raising, a Steinway Full Concert Grand
was purchased. In 1996, the piano was completely renovated with the help of a grant
from the Foundation for Sports and the Arts whilst recently, following an accident
whilst being moved, it has been returned to Hamburg for a complete re-
